It grows in some parts of the Andes, mostly at the altitude between 2000 and 4000 meters above the sea level. Manayupa has green, oval leaves that grow from the flexible, crawling stems which can be up to 50cm long. The leaves, fruit, and the stems are covered with specific dense bloom. The flowers are small, mainly pink. The seeds in small pods are 3cm long. Dense roots go down deeply, and thanks to that the plant can withstand the lack of humidity.
The fame of Manayupa dates back to the Inca Empire, when, because of its exceptionally beneficial qualities, it was a privilege of the highest social class.
In the language of Quechua, “runa mana yupana” means “its properties are endless”.
